Youngest Railumu makes switch to 7’s

Adi Salaseini Railumu achieved a significant milestone by making her debut for the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team at the recent Fiji Airways International Mini 7s Tournament.  

She is the younger sister of Susana Railumu and Setaita Railumu, both stars for the Rooster Chicken Fijiana Drua in 15s rugby. 

While Adi Salaseini Railumu had previously played rugby alongside her sisters in the 15s format, this marked her first outing into the world of 7s. 

“This is my first time trying 7’s in the national team, and it is a very big moment for me.”  

She proved herself, making an impact off the bench to score a try in her debut match.

Railumu acknowledged the differences between 15s and 7s rugby. 

“There is a big difference with 15’s and 7’s and the main thing is speed which is what I should work on,” she said. 

The 20-year-old is determined to impress Head Coach Saiasi Fuli during the Mini 7s tournament, believing it to be a crucial opportunity to showcase her skills.  

She stated, “I believe this is the only chance I will get to prove myself.” 

While Railumu remains open to the possibility of representing Fiji on the world stage, she is focused on improving her skills and fitness for now.  

“The Fiji Airways International Mini 7s Tournament provided me with valuable exposure, allowing me to compete against renowned players and gain experience in international 7s rugby,” Railumu added. 

The Nakelo, Tailevu native is set to feature in the upcoming Round 2 of the competition in this weekend’s matches.  

The Fiji Airways International Mini 7s Tournament is taking place at Churchill Park in Lautoka, with the exciting addition of two teams, the USA and Australia’s main team, joining the competition.  

The tournament is open to the public, with free entry, and encourages families to come out and support the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team while witnessing the skills of world-class women’s 7s players from New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and France on home turf.
