Secondary School Girls 7s Tournament this Friday – Fiji’s Legacy Program for RWC2015

Fiji Rugby Union launched the first ever Fiji Secondary School Girls 7s tournament today, which is also part of the Rugby World Cup legacy programme and the #BOLEA campaign in the lead up to RWC2015.

Twenty teams have confirmed their participation, with teams traveling from as far as Vanua Levu, Ovalau, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Lautoka, Nadi.

Last Saturday while Viti Levu focused on the Deans Final, all the teams in the North that are part of the tournament played friendly games to gauge their performance in the lead up to Friday.

For tournament organizers – this is an indication on how serious the participating schools are about the tournament. Bua College won all their games defeating, Khalsa College 17-0, Holy Family 17-12 and Holy Family II 19-0.

We’ve seen the success of the Fijiana team in the World Rugby Women’s Seven Series and we believe the Fiji Secondary School Girls 7s series will assist FRU in identifying potentials for national duty.

We are also grateful to the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) and Lawhill Wines for their financial support. FWCC are sponsoring two teams, Tonga and Samoa while Lawhill Wines is sponsoring, Fiji.

Women’s rugby is one of Fiji’s fastest-growing sports. Over the past 10years, women’s rugby in Fiji has made tremendous progress with 7s, 10s and 15s tournaments now part of the regular rugby calendar.

There are also many more women who wish to get involved with the sport. The Inclusion of rugby as an Olympic Sport has a great impact on the tremendous increase of interest amongst girls.
