New Zealand Coach Reflects on Mini 7s Tournament
There is excitement in the Black Ferns 7s camp as they prepare for the Fiji Airways International Mini 7s Tournament which begins this Friday.
This will be the team’s first tournament since the conclusion of the World 7s Series last year in Toulon.
Head Coach Cory Sweeny said, “We’ve been through a foundation phase in the last few months”
“We haven’t played since Toulouse last year, so there are a couple of important things to remember as we head into this tournament.”
Coach Sweeny emphasized the importance of unity and support among the players.
“Support each other, connect as a group and building our game is crucial, and this tournament will be a test of our physical prowess as we gauge our abilities against formidable opponents.”
Looking forward to the challenge that awaits them as they face other top four teams in the series, Sweeny acknowledged the strength of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team.
“Fiji is always strong, and playing against Fiji in Fiji is an incredible experience,” he added.
“A significant part of our work is to ensure that we are not just a team, but a connected and cohesive unit, especially in this tropical heat.”
Sweeny believes that participating in a tournament like this in Fiji should become a tradition.
“Fijians have an unparalleled passion for the game, and what better place to come and test ourselves?” he said.
“This experience will prepare us exceptionally well for the upcoming World 7s Series in Dubai next month.”
As the Black Ferns 7s embraces this unique opportunity they are not only preparing for the competition ahead but also forging bonds within the team.
“Fiji, with its great weather and vibrant rugby culture, provides the perfect backdrop for our chapter in this journey towards excellence in the sport we love,” Sweeny concluded.
The first round of games will be hosted at Suva’s Albert Park this Friday and Saturday, with the first match kicking off at 9.30am.
The teams will play a round robin with three games lined up for each team. Entry to the Fiji Airways Mini 7s Tournament is Free and the public is encouraged to come out in numbers with their families to support the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team and witness some of the World Class Women’s 7s players from NZ, Australia and France right here at home.
