Late try from Soyizwapi earn Blitzboks Oktoberfest 7s title

A late try from South Africa’s Soyizwapi gave them the victory over Fiji 12-10 to claim the 2019 Oktoberfest 7s.

It was a 5-all tie going into the break, into the second half with 3 minutes left to fulltime Fiji came in with superb off-load from Isoa Tabu to Vuniona Vuki who dive over for their second try.

Right in the dying seconds Soyizwapi’s footwork and pace earned him a try with the successful conversions from Dewald Human giving the Blitzboks a well-deserved win.

Fiji topped their pool and progressed to the final after beating New Zealand 14-12 in the semi-final.

Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber was happy with what the players executed as he knows that the young players in the squad is starting to build depth.

“We’re building depth and this is the first time this group has ever played together, so I am proud of what they have achieved,” said the Welshman.

The invitational Oktoberfest 7s is a platform used by HSBC 7s teams as a warm-up for the HSBC World Series, which kicks-off in Dubai this December.
