FRU extends Fijian 7s Coach Gareth Baber’s contract

The Fiji Rugby Union has announced the extension of the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s Coach Gareth Baber’s contract until the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan next year.

FRU CEO Mr. John O’Connor said that FRU is glad to sign Gareth on for another year and to have him take-charge of the 2020/2021 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series as well as the 2021 Olympic Games in Japan.

“Baber’s current contact was to expire on 5th February 2021 had the Tokyo 2020 Games taken place,” Mr O’Connor added.

“We’ve had to make this adjustment with the postponement of the Games to July next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr O’Connor explained.

Coach Baber thanked the CEO and the FRU Board for their trust and confidence in allowing him to guide the national side.

“Coaching the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team is a huge task and under-taking and I am grateful to be given the opportunity to continue this journey and to see the team through to the Summer Games next year,” Baber said.

Baber is now ranked one of the countries successful coaches, winning the most number of tournaments in a series and also grabbing the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series title.
