Fijian Warriors seal a bonus point victory against Tonga A

The Swire Shipping Fijian Warriors thumped Tonga A 47-nil to remain on track for the World Rugby Pacific Challenge title at ANZ Stadium in Suva.

The Fijian Warriors made a slow start and led 19-nil at half time with tries coming from debutant Marika Vularewa, winger Epeli Momo and half-back Simione Kuruvoli.

The rivalry was at its best between the two Pacific neighbours as they came in with a more physical approach in the second spell.

Tonga A had a few chances but the Fijian Warriors kept them at bay.

Taniela Soqonawasaloa, Osea Waqa, Joseva Nasaroa, and Alipate Waidilo who also made his debut off the bench got a try each.

Head Coach Kele Leawere said the players displayed a much improved game then the first match but there is still a lot to be done.

Leawere said “There is a lot of work we need to do like ball retention as we kept on losing the ball in the game.”

“We have managed to build phases.

“The first-fives were too far from the half-back plus there was some unnecessary kicking” he said.

Leawere added “We got the ball, we should have kept it and be patience so that the space is created”.

Leawere also acknowledged the two debutants Marika Vularewa and Alipate Waidilo for their contribution against Tonga.

“Most of them are still Under-20 and they have big shoes to fill.

“They have shown they can perform to that level and full credit to them.

“I told them to enjoy for now and get ready for the match against Japan”.

He added they need to recover and prepare well for the final match against a consistent Junior Japan.

“Full credit to Japan they played well and have beaten a strong Samoan side.

“We will not take Japan lightly and we are looking forward to the game on Saturday” he said.

In the matches on Saturday, Tonga A takes on Samoa A at 1.00pm, Swire Shipping Fijian Warriors meets Junior Japan at 3.30pm and in the final match of the day Fijian Latui faces China Lions at 6.15pm. All games will be played at ANZ Stadium.
