Fiji Rugby organises Womens Club Competition

As the season of the Fiji Rugby Provincial Cup drifts closer onto our shores, the Womens Development Manager Vela Naucukidi sets course in providing game time opportunities for players willing to partake in the competition.

The Womens Development Unit started the club competition last weekend at the University of the South Pacific grounds in Suva with five clubs the Marist Blue and Red together with Strikers, HOPE and Valkyries took part and plans are to continue with the meet in the next few weeks.

“The tournament was funded by Fiji Rugby and its purpose was to give the girls some game time before the Skipper Cup competition next month,” said Naucukudi.

“We’ve seen all the unions have started their club competition but none of them organized games for the women so for us we looked at it from that angle.

The Fiji Rugby women’s development team has set mapped out a plan to try and expand the club competition to other parts of Fiji.

“We would love to expand it and to host it around the country and I have been calling the unions in Lautoka, Nadi and in the North but most of them haven’t had their AGM to select their coaches and managers.

Naucukidi travelled to Nadi and Lautoka on Wednesday trying to organize a club competition for women in the area.

She added that some Fijiana 15s players were also part of last week’s meet.

“It would be nice to see more Fijiana 15s players come to participate for their clubs and allow them game time,” she said.

“We having a tournament this weekend and again the following weekend where it will be celebrated together with International Women’s Day.
