Fiji Airways Men’s 7s Finalises Preparations ahead of the London 7s

The Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team had a Scrag game with the England 7s team, in preparation for the HSBC World 7s Series, London 7s Tournament this weekend.

Fiji Airways Men’s 7s Coach, Gareth Baber says that the Scrag game went very well as it tested both teams in their attack and defensive areas and that the team travelling a few days early before the tournament was an advantage for them in terms of preparations.

“It has been a good three or four days and we finished up with games against England today which went really well.  The England side put the he boys under a lot of pressure with their pace, speed and very good passing game and our players were forced to work hard in their defensive shape.”

“There wasn’t any tackles and it is what we call a Scrag Game but we managed to score a couple of tries against them.  What was most pleasing was the way that our players put their game together and it was nice to see the likes of Amenoni Nasilasila and Captain Jerry Tuwai break open the English defense with their step and footwork, and having the power and pace on the edges as well with the likes of Eroni Sau, Pauliasi Dranisinukula and Josua Vakurinabili really caused problems for the opposition.”

”We played four blocks of six minutes and we put out two teams of 7, using up all the 14 players that we have with us.  They are really fit and it is good to have these numbers with us here and obviously we are blessed to have the Fiji Rugby Union supporting us in our endeavor to really bring home these trophies over the next couple of weeks.”

Baber added that the team will move into the tournament hotel this evening and will continue with their training.

“We move into the tournament hotel this evening and we are going to continue training ourselves in two groups of 7 down in Chelsea and getting ourselves in a good position for the weekend.”

Meanwhile in the weekend, the team were welcomed at the Fiji High Commission in the United Kingdom, office, where they presented their “Sevusevu” a Fijian traditional protocol to announce their arrival and seek the blessings of the Fiji High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency, Mr Jitoko Tikolevu ahead of the London 7s.

The 2018 London 7s kicks off this Saturday, 2 June at the Twickenham Stadium in London and the Fiji Airways 7s team heads pool A and faces Argentina in their first pool match, then Scotland and finishes off their last pool match against New Zealand.
