A lot of school management, teachers and even parents have reservations when it comes to rugby in schools. This is due to the physicality of the sport and the fear of injuries. However with the introduction of Get into Rugby (GIR), most of these schools that don’t play rugby welcome the programme in school.

Last week, Development officer Alifereti Mocelutu with Paulini Tamatasasa’s assistance conducted rugby skills to young kids at Vunimono Sanatan Primary School and Vunimono Islamic Primary School. It was the first time for most of these enthusiastic kids to hold a rugby ball. Following a lesson on basic rugby drills the kids played tag rugby.

Vunimono Islamic Head teacher Mr Kaiyum said it was the first time for the children in his school to take part in a rugby programme.

“It’s the first time for Fiji Rugby Union to visit this school and we are grateful that Mocelutu and Paulini taught the students some rugby skills,” Mr Kaiyum said.

“The programme was really good, very enjoyable and the kids loved. We will continue with it this week.”

For the two schools in Vunimono, 193 boys and 180 girls took part.

GIR program and laws were introduced to the kids before they practice ball handling, ball placement and picking up the ball.

To make it more enjoyable for the participants, they participated in a relay race on ball placement, relay on scoring tries and overhead relay pass.

During the final session, all played a 7s a side tag rugby. GIR continues at these two schools this week, on Wednesday and Thursday.
