Na Soko Championship Bridges the Gap

Mela Matanatabu… featuring for Camakau

Six players invited into the Vodafone Fijiana XV training

Created to bridge the gap between provincial competitions and the professional level of the Vodafone Fijiana XV the Na Soko tournament has already proven its impact. From its inaugural season, six standout players have emerged, now invited to join the Vodafone Fijiana XVs squad for training this week.

Wainikiti Vasuturaga stands tall among them, not just as a powerful forward, but as a symbol of consistency and grit. With multiple Test caps and an appearance at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, she returns to the Vodafone Fijiana XV fold as both a leader and a reminder of how far dedication can take you—from the fields of Fiji to the world’s grandest stage.

Beside her is Mela Matanatabu, the composed and commanding inside center whose intelligent play and strong carries made her a standout at the last Rugby World Cup. She brings not only experience but vision—her ability to read the game and direct play from the midfield adds crucial depth to the squad. What began in local tournaments has now seen her compete at the highest level of women’s rugby, and she continues to inspire the next generation.

Then there’s Aqela Camari Raitubu, the youngest of the group at just 20 years old. A hooker from Ra, she represents the future of the Vodafone Fijiana XV forward pack. Born in 2004 and nurtured by her club in Nasinu, Aqela’s call-up is a reminder that talent knows no age—only commitment.

Teresia Tinanivalu, another returning Vodafone Fijiana XVs player, brings valuable experience and drive. She’s a player who thrives in tight contests and whose name is steadily becoming known across the Pacific.

Selai Naliva from Suva has risen through the ranks quietly but with powerful intent. Her hard work at the club level hasn’t gone unnoticed, and now she gets her chance to shine on the biggest stage yet.

Finally, Maria Rokotuisiga, a dual threat who has already shown her talent with the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s and Fiji U18s. Her transition into the 15s game adds flair and pace to the squad and shows the kind of cross-format versatility Fiji continues to produce.

Their paths to the Vodafone Fijiana XV’s might differ, but they share a common origin: a competition rooted in community, opportunity, and sheer love of the game. The Na Soko Women’s Competition may not fill stadiums, but it fills hearts—and more importantly, it fills the national pipeline with fierce, capable women ready to take on the world.

As these six players are a step closer to pulling on the national jumper, they carry with them the voices of their villages, the strength of their sisters, and the unshakable belief that dreams can indeed rise from grassroots.
