Obituary – Esala Nauga

Fiji Rugby Vuvale is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and dedicated sons, Esala Nauga, who passed away peacefully last week on Friday, 17th October. He will be laid to rest on Friday, 24th October, at his home village of Nadroumai, Nadroga.


He is survived by his beloved wife and three children, who were his greatest pride and joy.
Born on 6th July 1967, Nauga’s rugby journey began with Tovolea Rugby Club, before going on to represent Nadroga with distinction. Between 1992 and 1995, he proudly wore the white jersey of Fiji, earning eight (8) Test caps as a powerful and skillful second five-eighth. His debut match came against Wellington on 24 May 1992, and his final Test was against Tonga on 9 July 1994.


Following his playing career, Nauga devoted his life to developing rugby talent in his province and across Fiji. As head coach of the Nadroga Rugby Union, he guided the Stallions to numerous victories, including Skipper Cup and Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy titles, and was named Coach of the Year in 2014.


He also coached Daveta Rugby Club, one of the feeder clubs for the national 7s team during Ben Ryans time. He served as assistant coach for the Fiji Warriors and Latui and contributed to the Fiji Drua setup in 2019 as a backline coach. His work extended to grassroots and school rugby, particularly with Natabua High School, where he mentored and inspired young athletes to chase their dreams.


Known for his humility, discipline, and deep commitment to the game, Esala Nauga leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered across generations. His influence continues through the many players he coached, the teams he built, and the community he uplifted.
