National Rugby Referees Seek Divine Blessing Ahead of New Season

July 22, 2025

In a show of unity and devotion, 400 rugby referees from across Fiji gathered for a special church service, seeking spiritual guidance and blessings for the upcoming season. Joined by family members and distinguished guests, the event underscored the vital role of match officials in upholding the integrity of the sport.

Organized by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) Referees Unit and the Fiji Rugby Referees Association (FRRA), the service highlighted the core values of teamwork, integrity, and faith in rugby. The strong turnout reflected the referees’ dedication to fair play and their shared mission to preserve the spirit of the game.

James Bolabiu, Fiji Rugby High Performance Referees Manager, emphasized the significance of the gathering:

“This was more than just a prayer session—it was about strengthening our unity and purpose. We want our referees to leave here with renewed morale, a stronger bond as a team, and a clear focus on their role in shaping the future of Fiji rugby.”

The event also served as a platform for referees to align with FRU’s vision for consistent and high-quality officiating. With the new season fast approaching, organizers hope the spiritual and motivational elements of the service will inspire greater professionalism and excellence on the field.

FRRA extended its gratitude to the special guests in attendance, including:

  • Rev. Atunaisa Lagilagi (Head of the Methodist Church Lautoka Circuit), who delivered the sermon.
  • Mr. Koli Sewabu (Fiji Rugby Acting CEO).
  • Mosese Naivalu (Fiji Rugby Board Member).
  • Mr. Talemo Waqa (World Rugby Regional Training Manager & Interim FRRA Chairman).

The ceremony set a positive and unified tone as Fiji’s rugby referees prepare to officiate with fairness, passion, and faith in the season ahead.
