Get into Rugby

FRU Development Officer Joeli Tubu conducted a Get into Rugby (GIR) program last Wednesday at Rabulu Primary School in Ra. It’s the first time for a program as such to be run at the school. Out of the 188 students that took part, 93 were girls.

Tubu said  he is to return to Rabulu Primary to conduct more sessions. As a result of the positive response from students, Rabulu Primary is hoping to take part in the GIR festival that is scheduled for May in Tavua. The festival is targeting primary schools around the region from Ra to Ba.

“We’ve introduced GIR to twenty schools and this will increase as we progress this year,” Tubu said.  He’s grateful for the support showed by the Education Office in the West and for allowing him to conduct the GIR program in schools.

Last Friday, Tubu was also accompanied colleague Alifereti Mocelutu to run a GIR program for Davota Primary School. About 120 students tried and played.

Meanwhile, training and rugby education continues around the country with another Level 2 assessment to be done in Tavua. Four coaches, Akariva Tabutaci, Iveri Momo, Jonetani Savuti and Manasa Nabaro were assessed by Mocelutu.

Last Saturday, Mocelutu and Tubu ran another Level 1 (7s) Match Officiating Course in Korovou, Tailevu. Based in Brisbane, former national player Epeli Ruivadra while in the country took advantage of the opportunity by attending the course in Korovou. Twenty participants attended the coaching course while 13 for match officiating.

The course for women’s that was meant to run this Friday has been postponed due to the unavailability of Ratu Cakobau Park.

In Nadi, FRU’s Referee Manager Patrick Gock ran two Level 1 (7s) Match Officiating Course and one for women.  It’s the first of a few match officiating courses to be conducted in Nadi. He also assisted Oscar Umuumulovo with a Level 2 course where 21 participants attended.
