FRU Strengthens Coaching Workforce with World Rugby Level 3 Course During Symposium Week

While the Fiji Rakavi Union (FRU) Symposium 2025 is underway in Suva, another key development initiative is taking place simultaneously — the World Rugby Level 3 Coaching Course, hosted at the Pacific Theological College (PTC).
 
The course forms part of FRU’s broader commitment to building a capable, future-ready rugby workforce. It equips local and regional coaches with advanced tools and methodologies to elevate their coaching — and ultimately their teams — to the next level.
 
Led by World Rugby Coach Master Trainers Michael Magriplis and Wayne Masters, the course is supported by a highly experienced team of World Rugby Trainers, including Owen Roberts, Kris Burton, Ryan Rosevear, and Saiasi Bose.
 
Over the intensive program, participating coaches are being guided through the core components of elite-level coaching:
 
         1.      Advanced Coaching Principles
         2.      Player Development
         3.      Game Management
         4.      Coaching Methodology
         5.      Team Leadership
         6.      Evaluation and Reflection
         7.      Performance Analysis
 
“It’s about growing smarter, more effective coaches who can inspire performance at every level of the game,” said Acting CEO Koli Sewabu.
 
This regional initiative reflects FRU’s strategic direction — to invest not only in high-performance rugby but also in development systems at all levels, from grassroots to elite. The goal: long-term sustainability and competitive success for Fijian rugby.
 
Mr. Sewabu praised the dual efforts taking place across Suva this week:
 
“As the Symposium charts the future of rugby in Fiji, this Level 3 course is a practical example of that vision in action. It’s vital we continue investing in our people — our coaches, educators, and leaders — to build a stronger rugby nation.
 
Coaches today don’t just deal with rugby components — we’re helping them develop good people and future leaders.”
 
He further emphasized rugby’s broader social responsibility:
 
“With the intrusion of drugs, meth, HIV, and other serious challenges, it’s crucial that rugby is used as a vehicle to address these issues head-on and without compromise.”
 
The World Rugby Level 3 certification is one of the highest coaching qualifications offered by the sport’s global governing body. It serves as a key benchmark for coaches aspiring to work at national or professional levels.
 
With both the Symposium and Coaching Course running concurrently, this is a landmark week for rugby development in Fiji — underlining the Union’s commitment to a united, well-resourced, and high-performing rugby ecosystem.
