FIJI Water Flying Fijians: Tagiveitaua Working His Way Through the Ranks

July 3, 2025

A shining product of Fiji Rugby’s Elite Pathway program, Ratu Kavaia Tagiveitaua has steadily climbed the ranks—from Kaji Rugby and the Vodafone Deans Competition to representing Fiji at the U20s level twice.

Now, the promising hooker is on the verge of a major milestone as a potential debutant in the Flying Fijians’ July Test series against the Wallabies.

Hailing from Lomanikoro, Bua, with maternal links to Namaqumaqua Village in Serua, Tagiveitaua has dedicated himself to becoming a better rugby player. “I saw an opportunity to make a career in rugby, and that drives me to work hard—not just for myself, but to provide for my family,” he shared.

The former Marist Brothers High School student credits Fiji Rugby’s High Performance Unit (HPU) for shaping his development. “Being part of the U20s program opened my eyes to the possibilities in rugby, especially earning a professional contract. The HPU system helped me with gym work, fitness, and preparing mentally for the challenges ahead,” he said.

Now contracted with the Fijian Drua, Tagiveitaua is a testament to Fiji’s homegrown talent system. He emphasizes the importance of mindset in taking the next step. “To progress, we must start thinking like Tier One athletes. That’s the level we need to reach,” he stated.

Under the guidance of experienced campaigners like Tevita Ikanivere and Sam Matavesi, the young forward is eager to make his mark. “Wearing the white jumper for the Flying Fijians is a dream come true.

I can’t wait to run onto the field and represent my country,” he added.

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians will face the Wallabies in their opening Test of 2025 at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Australia. Kick-off is at 3:30 PM (Fiji Time), with live coverage on FBC Sports.
