FIJI Water Flying Fijians: Baselala Calls Selection “Surreal” Ahead of Possible Debut

July 4, 2025

Rising Fijian halfback Philip Baselala admits his call-up to the FIJI Water Flying Fijians squad feels “surreal” as he prepares for a potential test debut against the Wallabies this Sunday in Newcastle.

The 21-year-old Drua playmaker, a product of Fiji’s HPU Elite Pathway Program, earned his spot in the 32-member squad after impressing head coach Mick Byrne during the Super Rugby Pacific season.

Byrne had earlier highlighted Baselala as a player to watch, saying, “We’ve been monitoring his progress, and given the current situation with our halfbacks, this could be his opportunity to earn selection.”

Baselala’s breakthrough came in Round 14 against the Western Force in Lautoka, where his standout performance secured him another start in Round 16. Reflecting on his national call-up, the Nakasaleka, Kadavu native said, “I thought the feeling would be the same as when I signed with the Drua, but this is another level. It’s surreal—new challenges, but I’m grateful for the seniors guiding me.”

Despite his rapid rise, Baselala remains grounded, taking advice from his parents to “focus on his goal”—wearing the Flying Fijians jersey with pride.

Fans can catch Baselala’s potential debut LIVE on FBC Sports this Sunday at 3:30 PM (Fiji Time) as Fiji kicks off their 2025 test campaign against Australia.

Will he make the final cut?

Stay tuned.
