Big Challenge Ahead of Vodafone Fiji U20 Tour

The Vodafone Fiji U20 team to the National U20 championships in Canberra has a big challenge ahead of them as they try to win back a spot in the World Rugby Junior World Cup.

This was revealed by Vodafone Fiji U20 coach Viliame Gadolo at the naming of the team last night.

“It was not an easy job to select the 25 for the tour to Canberra, because we started with 140 players who attended the first fitness test from which 70 were selected.  Following the proper selection process we then reduced the number to a 30 member training squad.”

“While this is a proud moment for the 25 to be selected, there is still a big challenge ahead of them because of the relegation to the World Rugby Junior Trophy last year.  This opportunity is a blessing for them as they will fight to get Fiji back into the JWC.

Gadolo explained that the JWC is the nearest level of competition for a Fijian to play that is close to Test Match Rugby.

FRU CEO Radrodro Tabualevu congratulated the team on their selection but gave them a few words of advice.

“After tonight, all the households will know your name and you will become public property because you will be representing all of us, your village, your family, the FRU and the nation.”

“During my term as CEO, I have met lots of people who say that Fiji has the makings of champions, but the only ones that stand in the way of succeeding are ourselves with the choices that we make.  If you know that you have the qualities and talent to be a Flying Fijian then you need to sacrifice and do the hard yards.”

“You will need to work as a team and be honest with yourselves.  Remember that if you don’t do well, expect the worst from the same people that cheered when you were selected that’s when you support each other as brothers and as a team.”

The 2015 National U20 Australian Championship will feature the Australian Barbarians, Tonga, Queensland, New South Wales and Fiji from 19 March to 25 March.
