Between the Whistle and Motherhood: Meresiana Savenaca’s Sacrifice Behind the Game

May 6, 2026

Meresiana Savenaca’s journey into rugby refereeing is more than a profession; it is a story shaped by sacrifice, tough choices and the realities of motherhood.

She began officiating with the Fiji Rugby Union in 2018, gradually earning respect for her commitment and passion for the sport. Ms Savenaca said her interest in refereeing was sparked by watching rugby Sevens and seeing one of Fiji’s leading female referees in action.

“Seeing a woman in the middle of the field made me believe I could do it too,”
she recalled.

That moment inspired her to step into a role that is still not always easy for women to pursue.

However, the journey has not been smooth. Ms Savenaca has faced criticism, including name-calling and gender bias both on and off the field. But she has refused to let those experiences define her.

“If anything, those experiences have made me more determined to stay focused and carry myself professionally every time I step onto the pitch.
“There are times when the comments hurt, but I remind myself why I started, and I keep going,”
she said.

Away from rugby, her most important role is being a mother. The single mother of two children, Ben and Meshi, shared that despite her demanding work schedule, she always prioritises her children. They currently live in her village of Vakativa, Wailevu, Cakaudrove, with their grandmother.

She admitted that being apart from them is never easy, but she makes sure they remain close through regular calls and messages, no matter how busy life gets.

Ms Savenaca said her mother is her number one supporter and described her as the backbone of the family. While she works, her mother cares for the children, a sacrifice Ms Savenaca does not take lightly. She is deeply grateful for that support, knowing she could not manage everything on her own.

“My mum is my biggest support, without her, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do,” she shared.

The 26-year-old said balancing work and family life comes with emotional challenges, especially being away from her children.

But she continues to push forward by staying connected with her family and taking each day as it comes with focus and purpose.

She also believes strongly in protecting her peace of mind. Ms Savenaca said she tries to begin each day without stress or unresolved issues so she can give her full attention to her responsibilities.

With Mother’s Day approaching, she shared her appreciation for mothers everywhere, those working long hours and those caring for families at home, recognising the sacrifices they make every day.

Ms Savenaca also wished all mothers, new mums, grandmothers, and mother figures — a Happy Mother’s Day.
