The Men’s HSBC World Sevens Series

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens, now rebranded as HSBC SVNS has undergone a restructure of the format which presents a major overhaul of World Rugby’s global sevens series. The new format was launched with the 2025-26 SVNS season. It shifts from the old 12-team model to a three-tier, merit-based pyramid, showcasing more events, elevated competition and clearer promotion/relegation. The Fijian 7s team have consistently been a powerhouse in the men’s competition, which secures their place in the top tier – Division 1.

The Women’s HSBC World Sevens Series

The Fijiana 7s currently features as one of the 8 core teams in the HSBC SVNS Division 1. The competition runs alongside the men’s tournament.

The women’s tournament is held at the same locations as the men’s, with six regular-season events leading up to three high-profile championships. As a Division 1 Team, the Fijiana 7s automatically qualify for the SVNS World Championship.

The HSBC SVNS, gives leading rugby players across six continents the chance to experience global, elite level, high-performance sevens competition and coupled with the spike in interest after the Olympic Games, the series has sparked significant growth in the women’s game with increased appetite for broadcast, live streaming and social media.

STRUCTURE BREAKDOWN

HSBC SVNS Division 1 (Top Tier – “The Series”)

This divsion comprises of 8 men’s and 8 women’s teams competing in 6 regular-season events. Typically hosted in Dubai, Cape Town, Singapore, Perth, Vancouver and New York. These teams compete for individual tournament titles and the regular – season league standings.

The Fijian 7s Team remain one of the premier teams in the Division 1 competition. Known for their flair, speed and physicality, they are among title contenders and regularly feature in the top standings. The Fijiana 7s are also apart of the elite 8, uplifting Fiji’s presence in the women’s competition.

HSBC SVNS Division 2

Division 2 is the second tier in the three division pyramid. This competition serves as a bridge between the Challenger level (Division 3) and the elite Division 1, offering emerging and mid-tier nations a pathway to the top.

The competition consists of 6 men’s and 6 women’s teams, competing at 3 designated venues. The top 4 teams advance to the SVNS World Championship along with the 8 Division 1 teams.

HSBC SVNS Division 3 (Challenger Tier)

Division 3 is the entry-level. It is designed to give developing and regional rugby nations a pathway into higher levels of the global sevens series.

The competition consists of 8 men’s and 8 women’s teams, competing in a single 2 day tournament. The top 2 teams earn promotion to the HSBC SVNS Division 2 for the same season. This structure gives teams like Hong Kong, China and Samoa a chance at climbing the ladder in a single season.

The HSBC SVNS World Championship

This is the grand finale of the new three-tier SVNS season. It is a separate high-profile mini-series which crowns the overall World Champions of the year.

The championship features 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams competing across three tournaments, hosted in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux. The teams consist of the top 8 teams from Division 1 and the top 4 teams from Division 2. The team with the highest accumulated points across all three venues is crowned the HSBC SVNS World Champion.
