2-Year Grind Culminates in Historic Final for Malolo Rugby

After a strategic two-year build, the Malolo Rugby Union is poised for its greatest challenge yet – the 2025 Skipper Cup Final against giants Naitasiri this Saturday at the HFC Bank Stadium.

This weekend’s showdown is the culmination of a journey that began in 2023. That year, the team fell short of its initial goal—the Vodafone Vanua Cup Quarter Finals—but used the setback as fuel.

The following season in 2024, they surged all the way to the Vanua Cup Final, losing a in heartbreaker to Vatukoula by a single point, 20-19. That narrow loss, however, earned them promotion to the prestigious Skipper Cup, where they have defiantly maintained their momentum.

Malolo Rugby Union President, Ratu Jone Tuilawa, emphasized that the team’s remarkable rise this year was no accident.

“This was not an overnight exercise,” Tuilawa stated. “All stakeholders, management, and the players have put in the hard yards and commitment to get to the finals this coming weekend.”

According to Tuilawa, the administration’s strategy hinged on a single, paramount principle –  player welfare.

“One thing that we found was paramount in getting our players to work at peak performance is to look after their welfare,” he explained. “At the moment, there are three of us administrators within Malolo Rugby Union strategizing ways to improve the team, but also, at the same time, how we can make sure they are looked after from week one to this week heading into the finals.”

He highlighted that their “main weapon” this season was a holistic approach to player support.

“Player welfare is not only what they receive in allowance, payment, or gifts post-match,” Tuilawa elaborated.

“It’s looking after every aspect of their tenure in camp so that they focus on getting their bodies ready for game-day, while we as administrators ensure they do that in a seamless manner and are comfortable knowing that they recover properly for the next challenge.”

This focus, coupled with strong communication and unified administration, has paid dividends. Throughout the 2025 Skipper Cup season, Malolo has consistently caused upsets, proving their place among the elite was no fluke and setting the stage for a highly anticipated final against Naitasiri.
