FIJIANA NAME TEAM FOR RWC CLASH AGAINST SCOTLAND

August 29, 2025

The Fijiana 15s have confirmed their matchday 23 to take on Scotland in their second Rugby World Cup 2025 fixture this Saturday, following a spirited effort in their opening match against World No. 2 Canada.
After a strong recovery and an intense week of training in Manchester, the side is eager to showcase their flair and resilience against a physical Scotland outfit.

Head Coach Ioan Cunningham said the transition from York to Manchester has been smooth, with players quickly adapting to new facilities and preparations.

“It’s the beauty of being in a World Cup – not just playing but also adapting to new environments. The girls have settled in well, we had a good recovery session after the Canada match, and training has been very positive. It has set us up nicely for match against Scotland,” the coach said.

Squad Selection
The Fijiana have retained much of the squad from their opening match, with a few exciting changes. Vika Matarugu earns a start at tighthead prop after impressing off the bench, while two dynamic wingers come into the backline – young prospect Michella’e Stolz and experienced campaigner Alowesi Nakoci.
Verenaisi Ditavutu also starts at outside centre, bringing physicality and athleticism to the midfield.

“We were pleased with many aspects of our game against Canada, and there were some outstanding individual performances. Bringing in Vika adds strength up front, while Michella’e and Alowesi Nakoci bring energy and experience on the wings. We’re excited to see them combine with Verenaisi in the backline,” the coach added.

Leadership
The team will once again be led by 21-year-old captain Alfreda Fisher, whose standout work rate and leadership qualities have inspired the squad.

“Alfreda is a superstar for us. She leads with her actions – you only have to look at her involvement in our try against Canada. She’s everywhere in those big moments, and that’s why she’s such a vital leader for this group. We’re excited to see her lead us again against Scotland,” said the coach.

Scotland, who impressed in their 38–8 win over Wales, will present a different challenge with their northern hemisphere style, set-piece strength, and defensive systems.

“We know Scotland will bring a lot of physicality, a strong kicking game and a solid set piece. We’ll need to be sharp at the breakdown and create opportunities to unleash our athletic players in space,” the coach concluded.

Vice-Captain’s Thoughts
Vice-Captain Bitila Tawake said the team is composed and focused heading into the weekend.
“There are always nerves and emotions at this stage, but as a team we are staying composed and concentrating on the small details. We’re really excited to see Michella’e Stolz and Alowesi Nakoci in the starting lineup – they’ll bring a lot of energy. We’re looking forward to the challenge against Scotland,” she said.

Message to Fiji
Both coach and players expressed gratitude for the continued support from Fijian fans back home.
“Keep those positive messages coming – they mean so much to the team. The players are giving everything for Fiji, their families, and their villages. Your support lifts us, and we carry that pride into every match,” said the coach.
