HISTORIC TEST MATCH: Vodafone Fijiana 15s Set to Face World No.9 USA in Crucial RWC Build-Up

The Vodafone Fijiana 15s side is set to make history this Saturday as they take on the USA Women’s Eagles in a much-anticipated international test match—one that not only marks a major milestone for women’s rugby in Fiji but also forms a vital step in the team’s preparations for the Rugby World Cup.

A New Chapter for Fijiana Rugby

Vodafone Fijiana Head Coach Ioan Cunnigham says the match represents more than just another fixture:

“This is a significant step forward in our Rugby World Cup preparation. The players are very excited by the opportunity to play in the USA at such a world-class venue and in front of a big crowd. It’s an occasion that inspires pride and purpose.”

Currently ranked ninth in the world, the USA presents a formidable challenge. The Eagles are known for their structured play, physicality, and experienced squad filled with World Cup veterans.

“We expect a tough, physical contest,” said the coach Cunnigham. “But our focus has been on shifting the ball away from contact and playing to our strengths—speed, width and instinct.”

Team Line-Up and Tactical Focus

The match-day 23 features a blend of youth, experience and explosive sevens flair. Notable inclusions are debutants Verenaisi Ditavutu and Kelerayani Luvu, both of whom have impressed in training.

  • Ditavutu, set to start at centre, brings raw power and finishing ability.
  • Luvu, will come in as an impact player, offers vision and creativity with a wide range of passing skills.

Joining them from the sevens setup is Ilisapeci Delaiwau, who adds pace and unpredictability on the wing.

Up front, Fiji will field two young props—Tiana Robanakadavu (20) and Loraini Senivutu (22)—anchored by experience hooker Bitila Tawake, a utility forward with invaluable leadership.

In the back row, captain Alfreda Fisher partners with Nunia Daunimoala, whose height and strength will be vital in the lineout and loose play. At No.8, Karalaini Naisewa brings experience, power, and tactical nous to control the base of the scrum.

At fullback, Litiana Vueti continues her development as the last line of defence and counter-attacking weapon.

One of the key focuses for the coaching staff has been finding the right balance between the Fijiana’s natural flair and the discipline required to compete at the highest level.

“We’ve been working on not overplaying and making sure we stay structured when needed,” said the coach Cunnigham. “That balance—between playing the Fijian way and staying composed under pressure—will be the difference between winning and losing.”

The team has also placed strong emphasis on managing the physical transition of the 7s players, using data tracking tools and workload monitoring to ensure optimal performance and recovery.

Looking Ahead

The fixture offers invaluable international exposure to younger players and those on the fringe of World Cup selection. With competition for spots heating up, Saturday’s clash could prove decisive for many players’ RWC hopes.

“Games like these are essential,” Coach Cunnigham  added. “The intensity and quality of opposition is exactly what we need to prepare for the Rugby World Cup.”
