FIJI Water Flying Fijians: Samuel Wye’s Journey from NZ to Flying Fijians

July 2, 2025

A dream has become reality for Samuel “Sam” Wye, the newest addition to the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, as he prepares for a potential debut against the Wallabies this Sunday.

The 25-year-old scrum-half, born in New Zealand to Fijian parents who migrated to his country of birth in the 90s, received the call-up of a lifetime when Fiji head coach Mick Byrne reached out with an unexpected invitation.

“I was driving to club training when I saw a missed call from Mick Byrne—I thought it was a prank!” Wye laughed. “He simply asked if I wanted to be part of the squad for the July Test. Of course, I said yes.”

Wye’s rugby journey began in the under-7s, progressing through Auckland’s St. Peter’s College, where he starred in the First XV’s New Zealand schoolboys championship win. His talent earned him a spot in Auckland’s NPC team, followed by two years with Hawke’s Bay, before landing at Counties Manukau.

Despite his quiet demeanor, Wye’s relentless work ethic has paid off. “My family was over the moon when I told them,” he shared. “This was always a dream, but I didn’t expect it so soon.”

Wye models his game after All Blacks great Aaron Smith and Flying Fijians Frank Lomani.

“I’ve always admired Aaron’s passing and leadership, while Frank’s defensive grit and work rate are what I want to bring into my own game,” he said.

The Flying Fijians face the Wallabies this Sunday, July 6, at McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle (3:30 PM Fiji Time). Fans can catch the action LIVE on FBC Sports.
