FIJI Water Flying Fijians Squad Nears Finalization as July Test Series Approaches

Suva, Fiji – With just 57 days remaining before the FIJI Water Flying Fijians face Scotland at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, head coach Mick Byrne has confirmed that he is in the final stages of selecting his squad for the July test series, which includes the anticipated clash against the Wallabies on July 6th in Newcastle, Australia followed by the match in Suva which is expected to attract a packed stadium.

Earlier this year, Byrne revealed an 80-player long list, featuring Northern Hemisphere-based players he scouted in England and France, as well as Fijian Drua stars competing in the Pacific Super Rugby competition. As the July window approaches, Byrne is now refining his selections, focusing on key positions to assemble a balanced squad blending experience from both hemispheres.

One of the major challenges for Byrne is strengthening the halfback position, especially with Frank Lomani ruled out due to injury recovery after undergoing surgery during the Super Rugby season.

“Most of our halfbacks play for the Drua, and we’re really keen to see Philip Baselala get some game time,” Byrne said. “We’ve been monitoring his progress, and given the current situation with our halfbacks, this could be his opportunity to earn selection.”

While Byrne emphasized that no player is guaranteed a spot yet, he confirmed that the coaching staff is working closely with the Fijian Drua to develop Baselala’s game. The young halfback will get a starting chance against the Western Force this weekend, with Byrne keeping a close eye on his performance.

The July test series marks the beginning of a packed schedule, leading into the Pacific Nations Cup in August and September, followed by the Autumn Tests in November.

Byrne confirmed that the wider squad will soon be trimmed to 60 players, with the final traveling team to be announced well before the Australia test. Fans can expect an exciting mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent as the Flying Fijians prepare for a crucial international season.

Stay tuned for further updates as the squad announcement draws closer.
