2026 Vodafone Deans Competition Officially Launched in Suva

June 4, 2026

The 2026 Vodafone Deans Competition was officially launched at Gospel High School in Suva on 4 June 2026, marking the beginning of another exciting chapter in Fiji’s most prestigious secondary schools’ rugby competition.

Hosted by the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU), Fiji Rugby Union, the Ministry of Education and Vodafone Fiji, the launch brought together school leaders, coaches, student-athletes, rugby officials, sponsors and stakeholders from around the country.

Officiating the event, Minister for Education Hon. Aseri Radrodro highlighted the significance of the Deans Competition, describing it as one of Fiji’s most respected sporting institutions that has shaped generations of young Fijians for nearly nine decades.

“For 87 years, the Deans Competition has provided a platform for students to represent their schools with pride while developing important life skills such as leadership, teamwork and discipline,” he said.

The Minister stated that participation in the competition continues to grow, increasing from 117 schools in 2024 to 121 schools in 2025, with expectations for even greater participation this year.

He said the growth reflects the enduring value of school rugby in strengthening communities and developing young people both on and off the field.

He also reminded students that while rugby creates opportunities, education must remain a priority.

“Every player wearing a school jersey must remember that they are first and foremost a student. Academic achievement and sporting excellence must go hand in hand,” he said.

With Fiji observing the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking this week, Mr Radrodro used the occasion to encourage students to make responsible choices and stay away from drugs.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining safe and drug-free learning environments throughout the country.

The Minister also acknowledged the important pathway school rugby provides, with many of Fiji’s top rugby representatives beginning their journeys through the Deans Competition before progressing to national age-grade teams, the Fiji Warriors, Fiji Drua and ultimately the Flying Fijians.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Fiji Regional Chief Marketing Officer Rajnesh Prasad reaffirmed the company’s long-standing commitment to rugby development in Fiji.

Mr Prasad said Vodafone has proudly supported rugby in Fiji for more than three decades and continues to invest heavily in grassroots and schools rugby programs.

“Rugby is far more than a sport in Fiji. It reflects who we are as a people and represents a legacy that connects generations,” he said.

He emphasized that supporting school rugby is about more than competition results, describing it as an investment in the future of Fiji’s young people.

“When we invest in young athletes, we’re not only growing the game. We’re helping to develop future leaders, role models and professionals who will contribute positively to our communities.”

Mr Prasad also encouraged parents to continue supporting their children’s sporting ambitions, noting that careers within the sporting industry are becoming increasingly attainable for young athletes willing to commit themselves to hard work and discipline.

As preparations begin across the country, both speakers called on players, coaches, officials and supporters to uphold the values of respect, sportsmanship and player welfare throughout the season.

The 2026 Vodafone Deans Competition is expected to once again showcase the passion, talent and school pride that have made the tournament a cornerstone of Fiji’s sporting and educational landscape.
