National players on the frontline inspiring the Nation

Fiji is yet to fully recover from all Covid-19 cases, but is a few steps away from discharging the last few patients with the virus.

The incredible response from the country’s frontline workers had been a key factor in containing the virus in the country. Prime Minister Josaia Bainimarama applauds and thanked all frontline workers in the country for the effort shown in the past few months.

Speaking at the FRU Bus handover ceremony Bainimarama mentioned a special word of thanks and appreciation for all Fiji Rugby athletes who are on the frontline battling the virus. While off national touring duties, these players are also on national duty serving and protecting the country from the deadly virus.

Most of our players on the frontline are in the army, the Fiji Police Force, a few nurses, Naval officers, and they all have been working tirelessly in the new field of play(frontline) to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the nation as a whole.

Bainimarama added that covid-19 hasn’t stopped our athletes on the frontline from finding new ways to inspire their nation, “including the members of our Men’s Sevens Side, who deserve a big vinaka vakalevu for their assistance to our nationwide awareness campaign to re-enforce healthy habits like hand-washing and physical distancing.”

He added that he’ll “never forget the happiness our 7s heroes’ Gold-medal victory in Rio brought to countless Fijians reeling in the aftermath of severe Cyclone Winston four years ago…The very nature of the coronavirus crisis has meant that we’ve had to take on this challenge unaided by the gallantry of our sportsmen and women.”

“I know how vital sport is for many Fijian businesses, along with the coaches and staff who make a living in supporting teams across the country. I know how difficult it is for some athletes to put their careers on hold and put the income they earn from competing aside. And I know how important sport is for ordinary Fijians –– particularly when our national spirit needs lifting.”

Bainimarama encourages members of the public to keep cheering on these heroes on the frontlines of our campaign against COVID-19.

“While we wait for rugby’s return, let’s appreciate and cheer on our frontline heroes I’m speaking of the Doctors, Nurses, Healthcare workers, Police Officers, and RFMF Personnel, along with our disaster Officials, who are helping win the war against this virus, even throughout our response to Cyclone Harold.”
