Fijiana XVs Tour a Success

The Fiji Airways Fijiana XVs women’s rugby team ended their Australian tour on a high note after winning bot their matches last week.

The Ro Alifereti Doviverata coached side walloped a star studded Brumbies Women side 33-7 in Canberra in their first match and then thrashed Newcastle Hunters 66-7 at the No.2 Sportsground in Newcastle in the second match.

Doviverata said that the successful tour enabled them to achieve their goals which was to win both matches and that it would not have been possible without the collective effort from the management down to the players even though they had only a short time to prepare.

He added that the players showed that they have the potential to play in more Women’s 15s tournaments.

“It showed during the tour that we have the potential to play in more Women’s 15s tournaments.  Whilst we took only 24 players, I am sure hundreds and thousands of other girls will want to play for the Fijiana XVs which will make the competition for places in the team very tough because Fijian players are naturally gifted athletes.”

This was his first Head Coach role for the Fijiana XVs and the former Flying Fijian Captain said that he had also learnt a lot from the tour.

In 2016 I was the assistant coach for the Fijiana XVs team and for me personally this tour has boosted coaching career.  It was satisfying to see that everything I wanted done was carried out on the field, so all the credit goes to the girls for fulfilling their roles.  I also learnt a lot of new things while coaching these girls and I will take that on board moving forward.”

“There is still room for improvement with the team, which is their core skills and positional roles.  Once they work on that, it would be easier to work on the patterns of play that any coach wants.”

He added that they also owed their success to the man up above.

“Every day while on tour, this team thanked God for their talent and the heart that made them working together.  We believed that where there was unity God commanded his blessings.  In saying that, we had obstacles and issues to deal with along the way and we made sure to stick together as a team during those times.”

“On behalf of the team, I would like to thank the FRU for providing this team with the opportunity to tour Australia and play the two matches.”
