Fiji Airways Fijian 7s finish fourth at Cape Town

Fiji Airways Fijian 7s finished fourth at the Cape Town 7s after going down to France on the Bronze final 29-24.

Our Fijian 7s went off on a good start beating USA 28-14 in an intense match on their pool A opener.

It was a good start from the boys as we open our second game against host South Africa with the first and two tries from Jerry Tuwai and Vilimoni Botitu.

On the sixth minute Rosco Specman scored South Africa’s first try and coming in to the second half it was all South Africa’s game with Senatla, Nel and Geduld scoring running in with each tries to seal the victory.

Fijian 7s manage to bounce back and hammered Japan 54-7 before disappointing a strong and determined Ireland team in the cup quarter final 31-12.

It was a disappointing loss to New Zealand as we got an early blow with two yellow cards from Meli Derenalagi and captain Paula Dranusinukula while New Zealand used it as an opportunity to capitalize and get points on the board to clinch the win 24-7

In to the Bronze final against France, the French took an early lead in the first half with tries from Barraque, Mignot and Zeghdar before World Rugby Men’s Sevens Player of the Year Jerry Tuwai got Fiji on the scoreboard just before half-time.

Mignot’s second try within seconds of the restart in the second half  extended France lead to 19-point, but Fiji replied with two quick tries from Sevuloni Mocenacagi and his brother Kavekini Tabu who tied the scores on injury time.

Waisea Nacuqu missed the conversion for the win while Veredamu scored the golden try giving France the Victory.

The boys will return from Cape Town on Wednesday and will prepare for next leg which is Hamilton Sevens on 26-27 January 2020.
