Educators course programme increase capacity of producing World Rugby accredited coaches, match officials and trainers

Fiji Rugby Union will host its World Rugby Educators Course next week in Nadi.

The educator’s course will be a 1 week programme as participants will go through trainer’s course, coaching, match officials, strength and conditioning, and will also include a development workshop for rugby development officers of FRU.

The week will finish off with a governance and development conference with executive members of the Fiji Primary Schools and Fiji Secondary Schools rugby unions.

Fiji Rugby Union Development Manager Koli Sewabu said the programme will increase the capacity of producing World Rugby accredited coaches, match officials, strength and conditioning trainers and also look at innovative ways of working collaboratively with those at grassroots level, especially primary and secondary school teachers.

This is part of Fiji Rugby training and education portfolio to involve and generate more local talents into this field.

“To be an educator you have to go through these trainings and assessments in order to have the accreditations to run World Rugby courses,” added Sewabu.

The Educator courses will allow the participants to run Level 1 courses in coaching, match officiating and strength and conditioning.

“The progression stages goes from being an Educator to a Master Educator, then you move up to become a Trainer.”

When participants meet the requirements as a Trainer they can also facilitate and run level 2 courses and assess coaches as well at that level. To date, we have 3 Trainers in Fiji.

“The highest level is the Master Trainer and currently we have only 1 master trainer in Fiji, Mr. Talemo Waqa and he is also the regional training manager for Oceania Rugby and World Rugby.”

Currently all level 3 courses in Fiji and the Pacific is run by masters trainers from abroad, coming from Australia and New Zealand and Sewabu mention that “ideally what we want to do is build up our capacity on that area so that come up the time we have our own master trainers here in Fiji.”

The Master Trainer course will be facilitated by Mr. Talemo Waqa.
