All preparations done for the opening HSBC Sevens Series tournament in Dubai

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s are raring to kick off the 2019/2020 HSBC World Rugby Series in Dubai tomorrow morning against Japan.

Coach Gareth Baber said the players have enjoyed a solid week on the training park ahead of the series opener.

“We have had several training sessions (here in Dubai) including a scrimmaging session against Wales.

“Those sessions are good as we get to see how other countries play against our style” Baber said.

“In a scrimmaging game we cannot use the physicality, tackles, turn over balls so we end up working on structures and systems against an unknown opponent” highlighted Baber.

With only a few hours until their first pool match against Japan, Baber said the preparation is done, now it’s up to the team to perform.

“The intention is to get the best out of everybody” he said.

“I don’t believe at looking back, I believe in looking forward.

“When guiding young men in international sports one of the biggest things we can offer them is the competition. Competition to win their place on the team, and to win games” Babe said.

15 other teams will be gunning for the top prize in Dubai and all of them will hope to make a powerful start on the first day of the tournament.

Baber said “(Japan) is the first test and challenge we get and it’s a good measure for us.”

He added “What I want to see is the response from players, our ability to learn and develop quickly.

“The intention is always to win, as you know winning emotionally makes you feel good” said Baber.

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s are pooled with France, Argentina and Japan.

They take on Japan in their first pool match at 4.02am tomorrow, then face Argentina at 10.04pm before playing France at 4.02am on Saturday.

The Cup quarterfinals begin at 8.14pm, semi-final starts at 12 midnight while the final is scheduled for 4.02am on Sunday.
