FRU postpones Fun Flavour Super 7s Series

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has confirmed this afternoon that after meeting with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Fiji National Sports Commission and based on the guidance from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services that it has decided to postpone the first leg of the Fiji Rugby Fun Flavor Super 7s Series and the Veiyasana Provider 7s Tournament, both planned to kick off this weekend.

While Fiji Rugby was prepared to host both the two Sevens tournament in accordance with the strict COVID 19 protocols, the main concern was the welfare and safety of everyone involved in view of the recent increase in new COVID 19 cases.

FRU Chief Executive John O’Connor said “We will await new guidelines from the Ministry of Health & Medical Services and Ministry of Youth and Sports before we confirm new tournament dates.”

He also confirmed that all rugby events will be stood down for the time being until COVID 19 Return to play protocols are reviewed and new protocols are put in place to address the current situation.   

The CEO Fiji Rugby apologizes to the Sponsors, all the Teams and likewise all the supporters but highlighted that safety and welfare of all involved was always a priority and that Fiji Rugby respected the guidance from the relevant agencies.

O’Connor confirmed that they will release the participation grant to all the teams to assist them as FRU awaits the new guidelines of hosting tournaments.

The CEO Fiji Rugby also highlighted that in view of this latest developments, the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s and the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s will now move into their respective bubbles as they prepare to depart for the Spain 7s next week.
