Fiji Airways Fijian 7s to face Kenya in the Cup quarterfinal

The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team is set to face Kenya in the Cup quarterfinal after finishing on top of its pool with three wins on day one of the competition at the Dubai 7s today.

The Saiasi Fuli-coached side defeated Australia 17-12 in the final pool match. Two tries from Iowane Teba and one try from Iowane Raturaciri helped the national side seal the match and remain undefeated during the first day of the competition.

Fiji Airways Fijian 7s player Waisea Nacuqu said the players displayed a great effort in the game and played their hearts out.

“First of all, I want to thank God for helping us in our win against a strong Australian side.

We have 11 new players and I can say that they coordinated well and gave their when we were down against Australia in the second half.

He added “It’s time to go back and recover well, do the planning and come well prepared tomorrow.

We know it will be a tough outing against a physical Kenya side and we need to take a well-deserved rest and come focused since it’s the Cup quarterfinals.

Fiji faces Kenya in the fourth quarterfinal at 7.34pm FJT. Argentina meets Ireland in the first quarter at 6.28pm FJT while South Africa faces Australia at 6.50pm FJT and USA battles it out against Great Britain at 7.12pm FJT tonight.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s side went down 25-19 against Russia as they wrapped up day one of the competitions in Dubai.

The spirited Russian side took advantage of the simple and basic errors from Fijiana and won the match in style.

The Fijiana 7s side sits second in its pool with one match to spare against leaders Great Britain tomorrow. The Rusila Nagasau captained side has 7 points while GB is in front with 8. They face each other at 9.07pm.

Day two of the Dubai 7s kicks off at 5pm FJT this afternoon.
