Fiji Barbarians' Sakeo Latianara in action. |
The Air Pacific Fiji Barbarians were no match for the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup defending champions Upolu Samoa, going down 22-5 in their round two match played on a dry pitch at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Friday night.
It was the hosts that scored first, via flyer Vima Tuidraki 9 minutes into the game to put Fiji in the lead 5-0 to the delight of a healthy 3,000 crowd that witnessed the match. Seven minutes later his opposite number, Pulemalie Sopo crossed over to level the scores before fullback Lolo Lui added the extra two points to claim the lead.
The Barbars were given two chances to reclaim the lead when Tongan referee Feao Nonu granted them two penalty goals, the first on the 20th minute and the second on the 34th minute to Ravai Fatiaki and Amani Bosenawai respectively, but unfortunately their efforts were not enough. The visitors went into the break leading 7-5.
The second half was a one-sided affair as Upolu Samoa took control of the game and notched two more tries via outside centre Gasolo Salima, with Lui adding a conversion and a penalty to wrap up the game.
Quotes:
Eddie Waqa (Air Pacific Fiji Barbarians coach):
“I am disappointed. We were hoping to secure a win tonight after last weekend’s loss. We came in with a game plan but unfortunately it did not work well for us. A lot of the things we hoped to do we ended up not carrying them out on the field.”
“I guess it’s back to the drawing board for us and we will try and improve on our game and hopefully notch a win.”
Fepuleai Selefuti Patu (Upolu Samoa coach):
“It’s a great game. I am happy with the way the boys played tonight. I thought they really did well especiall my centre Gasolo whom I thought played his best rugby. And to the rest of the boys for keeping our record sheet clean so far with two wins from two games.”
“We look forward to another win against the Air Pacific Fiji Warriors next week at home. A win should help us secure a place in the grand-final.”
