The Fiji U19s continued towards the play-offs hammering Tahiti 97-3 in their second FORU U19 tournament match at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday.
Coach Iosefo Bele said it was a good opportunity to test out some new moves before they take on Tonga.
“We wanted to test out some moves we didn’t use in our first game against Samoa,” Bele said. “ I told the boys it was not about winning but doing those things right as this was a build-up to our game against Tonga in our final FORU match. We also tried to test players in other positions, other than that they specialise in and I think it worked out well for us.”
“But all the same I also feel for the Tahitians. All the same I salute them for trying, they are trying to stamp themselves in the rugby arena and this is I believe a great stepping stone for them to learn.”
In the other matches, Papua New Guinea defeated Vanuatu 47-0 and Tonga beat Samoa 13-10.
Quotes Isitolo Maka (Tonga coach) “This was a great physical game. And I am proud at the way my boys played especially in their defence in the first half. Samoa had a great many opportunities to score tries but the boys held their ground.”
“I am here to win every game whether it be Fiji or any other team. And I believe we have set the platform through this win.
Robin Tarere (PNG coach): “I am happy with the boys’ performance. Our main goal today was to win. The ultimate goal for us in this tournament was to try and finish at the top so as to secure a spot in the coming Junior World Cup. This is the stepping stone to that and I am happy that we have managed to keep our scoring sheets clean.”
“We return to camp and try and brush up loose ends and await our next opponent.”
