The Highlanders ended the Sharks’ dream season on Saturday with a hard-earned 20-5 victory at Ganilau Park in Savusavu. In next week’s semi-finals, Eddie Waqa’s team face defending champs, the Stallions, whilst the Crusaders take on the Knights.
Quotes: Ili Tabua (FMF Flying Fijians coach):
“A good crowd came out today but unfortunately the Sharks were just not able to spark themselves to a win. Jack Prasad had a very quite game and the backline was quite out of focus in most facets of play. The Highlanders boasted a more experienced line-up and so they made better decisions than the Sharks which eventually won them the game. Sunia Koto and Bill Gadolo contributed immensely to the Highlanders front row given the wealth of experience from having played for Fiji. I will be naming the two teams for the Pacific Rugby Cup next week and by the looks of it, a number of guys in today’s match will be called up.”
Isei Rayawa (Highlanders manager):
“This win was very important for us especially since we were playing on Sharks home turf and many thought we were going to lose here today. We stuck to the game plan and that was to run the ball. We made some mistakes but I am thankful we came out winners today. The boys all played exceptionally well and I am very thankful to all of them. Next up is the semi-finals and we will give no other than our best.”
Rayne Simpson (Sharks coach):
“The Highlanders capitalised on our mistakes and that’s how they won. Our loss today was because of the many little errors which we should not have made. I have had a great time working with this side and given more time, they would be great. The Highlanders had some big names and my side was, in a way, fighting an uphill battle, but I am proud with their performance.
