Digicel Fiji Barbarians win Sri Lanka's Carlton 7s for the second year in a row. |
The defending champions Digicel Fiji Barbarians clinched the Carlton sevens 2010 title for the second year running beating the impressive Spain team 36-7 in the Cup Final.
The Fijians who looked a little off colour against the same opposition in their final group stage game, came out ‘all guns blazing’ in the final.
Sitiveni Waqa, Mitieli Namisi, Seremaia Burotu and Josefa Bole were the stand out performers for the winners making every half opportunity in to a score and making the opposition pay for their mistakes.
Josefa Bole scored the first try for the Barbarians and from there onwards it was all Fiji with Spain having to defend in most part of the game.
The Fijians who were the team to beat this time around looked far superior in the breakdowns and were just a treat to watch with ball in hand.
They displayed their typical flamboyant style of play in front of the rugby fans at the Stadium and showed the locals how proper sevens should be played. Their composure, focus and patience were exemplary right throughout the tournament.
Coach Iliesa Tanivalu had his work cut out coming in to the final having drawn level with the same opposition the previous day, but he made sure that his boys crossed the line when it mattered the most.
It was a superb effort from the Spain team in their road to the final beating the likes of the Samoan Barbarians and the Australian Legends in the Semi final and quarter final respectively. They displayed a lot of heart and skill and most importantly had the necessary finesse to compete with the big guns in the tournament.
