Serevi and selectors clarify decision Underline 07 January, 2009
Digicel Fiji 7s coach Waisele Serevi and his fellow selectors confirmed Wednesday their stand with regard to Setefano Cakau and the make-up of the team to the World Cup 7s in Dubai in March.

“We met with Wai and the other selectors this afternoon and we have agreed upon some issues related to the preparation of the Digicel Fiji 7s team to the World Cup 7s,” national coaching director Ilivasi Tabua said.

“We understand that Cakau is alleged to have been part of a group of prison officers who were linked to the death of Josefa Baleiloa. Among the issues agreed upon, the selectors and Wai have decided that only once Cakau is cleared of those allegations will he be included in any Digicel Fiji 7s squad. This will help prevent further problems as we look towards building the best team to the world event in Dubai.”

Tabua also clarified their stand concerning the make-up of the team to the Dubai World Cup 7s saying the team selection remain open to both overseas and local players.

“Contrary to media reports, the selectors would like to make clear the door remains open to both overseas and local players. All players have equal opportunities to try out for a spot in the final team. No position has been confirmed. All players vying for a spot will need to perform to their best and convince Wai they deserve to be in the team he would like to field in Dubai in two months time.”
