Naqelevuki's suspension nears end Underline 20 March, 2007

Sireli Naqelevuki’s suspension from rugby ends this week following a ruling from the world governing body, the International Rugby Board, on the player’s positive test for cannabis.

Naqelevuki, a star of the Digicel Fiji 7s world-conquering team from last year, tested positive for the banned substance on 9 December 2006 at the George 7s in South Africa.

The 26-year-old was suspended by the IRB from all forms of rugby until the findings were completed. And on Friday, the IRB ruled that he should serve a three-month suspension, meaning his ban ends this Thursday.

Fiji Rugby’s chief executive officer, Timoci Tavanavanua, said he hoped Naqelevuki had learned from his mistake and could now get his rugby career back on track.

“In missing the Wellington and San Diego 7s as well as the Super 14 season with the Stormers, I think Sireli has realised the size of his error,” Tavanavanua said.

“I hope he will now double his efforts to re-establish himself as one of Fiji’s bright young prospects.”
