Tailevu put on a powerful second half display to comfortably see off Northland 29-6 in the much anticipated Tailevu derby and claim maximum points from the fixture. In doing so the Lance Whippy coached side also saw ended Northland’s unbeaten start to the season while maintaining their own impressive form in the Digicel Cup – unbeaten in all four games played.

Despite the absence of key player Isake Katonibau, on tour with the Digicel Fiji 7s team in Scotland, Tailevu easily made amends through the performance of Katonibau’s replacement in the midfield - Nemani Turagalevu.

Turagalevu claimed the first try of the derby scoring in the right hand corner after Northland had taken an early lead via the trusted boot of Josevata Bola.

A second Bola penalty cut Tailevu’s lead to a single point but it was the kicking skills of fly half Sunia Bainivalu that allowed the visitors to maintain their led into the break. Following his conversion of Nava’s try with a penalty shortly before the breather to take Tailevu into the sheds 10-6 up.

Having sussed out the form of their opponents in the first half Tailevu turned the screws in the second half as the men in green ran in 19 unanswered points to leave Northland players floundering in the Gatward Park mud and their fans deflated

Three second half tries to Jaoji Dakuvula, Manueli Gade and Aisea Druma completed a second half rout and earned Tailevu their first bonus point of the season.
Tailevu’s Under 20s ensured the double was achieved on the day as they scraped through 7-5.
