Rugby Coaching Courses Underline 14 December, 2011 Rugby Ready Course / IRB Law

Rugby Ready is an injury management programme developed by the International Rugby Board to improve the safety of the game and prevent injuries. This Rugby Ready Course can be done on-line www.irbrugbyready.com and www.irblaws.com for the Law exam.

Each rugby season, it is compulsory for all coaches of players aged 9 and over to attend a Rugby Ready presentation facilitated by the Fiji Rugby Union Development Unit and sit an IRB Law exam on line every year.

The Rugby Ready programme started in 2007 to educate aid and support Players, Coaches and Match Officials and Unions on the importance of sufficient preparation for training and playing in order for Rugby to be played and enjoyed while minimising the risk of serious injuries.

The IRB has designed the Rugby Ready Course to be a compulsory requirement for Primary School, High School, Clubs and Provincial Rugby Coaches in Fiji.

Introducing Rugby (IRB Level 1 - Coaching)

This course is designed to enable coaches to acquire the basic skills so that players new to the game learn to play in a safe, enjoyable competition. The presence of any sport in a person’s life is beneficial for social, physical and personal development while broadening cultural awareness.

This course aims to develop coaches who know how to coach, as well as what to coach.

Principles of Rugby Coaching Course (IRB Level 2 – Developing Rugby Skills)

This course has been developed as a comprehensive course focusing on Key Factor Analysis of the skills of Rugby Union and the application of Key Factor Analysis in relation to the Principles of Attack and Defence – the Principles of Play.

In addition the course provides information on sport-generic areas such as the Role of the Coach, Sport Psychology, Communication, Physical Preparation, Individual Growth and development, Skills Analysis and How to Teach Skills.

The aim of the course is to provide coaches with the basic skills and knowledge required:

• To plan, implement and evaluate a safe and effective coaching session;
• To analyse and teach a skill;
• To identify the individual skills of rugby;
• To provide coaches with up-to-date information on the coaching of the units and mini-units of rugby eg. Scrum, lineout, attack, defence, counterattack, continuity etc.

Requires full attendance over approximately 20 hours. The accreditation process requires that coaches are currently coaching a team and is a separate part of the course. Course will be run on a modular basis over a two day period or over a number of days.

Coaches who attain accreditation at this level will also receive accreditation as an iRB level 2 coaches.
