His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has accepted the request from the Board of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to be the Patron of the FRU.
The President’s formal acceptance of the role comes after a meeting of the FRU Board and Ratu Epeli at Government House, the President’s official residence, on 30 June to discuss the matter.
The above process is in accordance with the FRU Constitution which states:
“The Council shall each year authorize the Board of Directors to approach the President of the Republic of the Fiji Islands to request his patronage.” For reasons unclear the above process was never fulfilled during the Presidency of the late Tui Vuda - Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda; and the last President to be formally approached to be Patron of the FRU was in fact the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
