New Zealand based Fijian Alex Hodgeman joined the Under 20 camp today for the Junior World Championships in South Africa in June.
The tight head prop plays with the Canterbury Academy in New Zealand and has so far impressed forwards coach, Bill Gadolo.
“Alex has been really impressive since he’s joined us and he topped our forwards in the fitness test, running a level 12/6 in the beep test, which shows the kind of training and playing environment he has come from,” Gadolo said.
The Under 20s play as a team against the Fiji Rugby Union’s Senior Academy team on Wednesday as a curtain raiser for the East vs West match that has been rescheduled to be held at Churchill Park.
Gadolo says his players have been training hard and are eager to play
“They have been going hard out for the past two weeks, this will also been an indicator for us to gauge where we are at the moment and what we need to work on.”
Within the squad there’s only one slight injury concern, to halfback Elia Ratucove, who injured his knee during a contact session last week. The medical team has been working with him and Gadolo says that come the match Ratucove will be fit again.
France-based Sevanaia Galala remains the only player yet to join the team. ‘
In one other development former Digicel Fiji 7s player Avenisi Vasuinubu has pulled out of the Under 20s training squad citing personal reasons as to his unavailability.
The Under 20s vs the Senior Academy Players kicks off at Lautoka’s Churchill Park on Wednesday 16 May at 1pm. The main East v West trial match kicks off at 5:00 PM.
