A big blow to the Flying Fijians squad to the Pacific Nations Cup in Japan as Nadroga lock Sekonaia Kalou has been ruled out of the team due to injury.
During the team’s medical check on Sunday afternoon, it was revealed that Kalou had suffered from a torn ligament in his knee joint during the East vs West match and would need six months to recover, ruling him out of the Flying Fijians team.
Team manager Isei Rayawa said that this was one of their policies they have been trying to implement, for players to go through the medical test before final selection into the national squad.
“We need players that are 100% fit,” Rayawa said.
“We have spoken to Sekonaia and he has accepted our decision, it’s also for his safety. We know that he has a long future in rugby but at the moment he has been pulled out from the squad.”
A replacement has yet to be named for Kalou. Meanwhile players also went through a beep test yesterday to help the coaching staff gauge current fitness levels.
“Nikola stood out during the fitness test which was expected because he has been training with the Digicel Fiji 7s squad”.
Captain Netani Talei and England-based Kameli Ratuvou are expected to join the team later this week.
