|Ikanikoda - ruled out for one month. |
A third knee injury in two tournaments has meant a third injury replacement for the Digicel Fiji 7s team. Livai Ikanikoda’s injury in Fiji’s opening game against Argentina in Dubai last weekend hurt, not only the player, but also Digicel Fiji’s chances of claiming consecutive tournament titles.
While Fiji still looked more than capable of winning the tournament without Ikanikoda, the side missed his energy and guile in the semi-final against a very well organized England side wearing disturbingly coloured jerseys.
Fiji rugby’s national team physiotherapist William Koong believes Ikanikoda may be out for up to a month.
“He’s got a partial tear to the ligaments in his right knee and will need to undergo intense physiotherapy,” Koong said.
“He’s ruled out of any contact sport for the next 4 weeks to allow healing to occur.”
Ikanikoda now joins Setefano Cakau and Jimilai Naikadawa on the sidelines all recovering from knee injuries.
But while both Ikanikoda and Cakau have an outside chance of recovering in time for the next stage of the World Series, to be played in Wellington and Las Vegas in February, Naikadawa’s injury means he’s unlikely to return to training for at least another two months which rules out the Nakorosule villager from at least the next stage.
