Fijiana squad members begin preparations for the Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia. |
Fijiana have begun sevens rugby preparations for the upcoming 2011 Pacific Games to be held in New Caledonia in August and September. A squad of 40 players has been selected by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and will undergo intense training over the coming months assisted by the FRU development unit.
The Fijiana 7s team will be coached by Elenoa Kunatuba who is undergoing assessment as a Level 3 coach and is recently returned from a stint with the Indian National Women’s team. A former national player herself Kunatuba has vast knowledge and experience of the game and is probably the highest qualified women’s rugby coach in Fiji.
In preparation for the Pacific Games a match against a visiting Chinese team in July has been planned and, along with some other top games in between, the girls are confident they should be well equipped to take on the best in the Pacific in New Caledonia.
There’s no doubt a gold medal beckons for the Fijiana Team, and should they need to look for inspiration they need look no further than the Digicel Fiji 7s team who are the defending champions in the men's grade -
perhaps a case of whatever men can do women can equal!
