Fiji TV 7s moves to Nausori
27 January, 2011
The Fiji TV Provincial 7s Series moves to Nausori on Saturday 5 February for the third and final round in the series before the 12 top teams head into the national finals to be held on February 19 at the National Stadium in Suva.
The third leg of the series had initially been scheduled for Labasa, however the venue was changed after it became clear many teams would struggle financially getting across to Labasa as FRU operations manager Vilikesa Rinavuaka revealed.
“A number of unions said they would struggle sending a team across, so to uphold the integrity of the Series the move to Nausori was initiated,” Rinavuaka said.
The move has proved popular with 14 teams, including Macuata, already registered for the tournament.
“After the success of the first two legs, as well as the added impetus of the Uprising 7s tournament, the local 7s season is developing very nicely and this means we’re bound to unearth more talent which is always very pleasing,” RInavuaka said.
Namosi Two currently lead Namosi One on the Fiji TV Provincial Series table. The top 12 teams on the table gain automatic qualification for the national finals. In 12th spot on the table is Rewa who are one point behind Tailevu One.
“You could probably put a ring around the top six teams qualifying for the national finals, however the next six places are still wide open and teams will need to participate in this tournament to consolidate their position on the table and gain automatic entry into the nationals.”
In addition to the top 12 teams four wild card places will be made available. These four places will be selected at the discretion of the FRU and may include interested overseas teams.
