Red Rock win Uprising 7s
22 January, 2011
After having disposed of Samoa so handsomely in the quarter finals 22-5, Army started the Fiji International Uprising 7s Cup Final as favourites over Red Rock.
It was a tag they justly deserved in the first half as they threatened to run riot in a game played almost entirely within Red Rock’s half of the ground.
Using their big men Army ran straight and hard and despite strong defense from Red Rock they could do little to prevent the inevitable as Dale Tonawai sliced his way through brittle defense to score in the sixth minute of play.
Two minutes later Army doubled their lead when Aminiasi Nava dotted down, and then when a minute later Sevuloni Lutu scored the game looked to be heading towards an anti-climax as the red and greens went into the break 15-nil in front.
Army began the second half with as much intent as they’d started the first as they used size and power to gain possession and territory against their smaller opposition. However indiscipline set in when in the second minute Jone Natua was sin binned for a repeated infringement.
Red Rock took advantage of their extra man with Alipate Savai going through a desperate Army tackle to score in the corner. When skipper Peni Gaumeke nailed the conversion from out wide there was a glimmer of hope for Red Rock.
That glimmer became a bright ray of belief when lanky forward Seniyasi Matelewena scored under the posts. Gaumeke converted to put Red Rock behind by just a single point 14-15.
With the pressure on and time running out Gaumeke led from the front as he attempted to outrun the Army defense. He tired and was caught but from the ensuing play the Army defense faltered and Isoa Tuinakoro completed the comeback for Red Rock as he touched down just before the final buzzer to hand Red Rock the win and $20, 000.
The final score 19-15 to Red Rock.
