Europe Diary Day 24 - Flying Fijians beat Romania
29 November, 2009
A weakened Flying Fijians team was always going to struggle against a Romanian team playing in front of a parochial home crowd. So the four tries to two victory in the end was just reward for a Fiji team made up predominantly of local based players.
The win, 18-29, was by no means spectacular however after 24 grueling days on tour it was certainly sweet reward, particularly for debutants Jimilai Naikadawa and Kelemedi Bola – both of whom claimed a try apiece.
The Romanians in the end had themselves to blame after a strong first half performance was blown away when they attempted to play the Fijians at their own game in the second half and run the ball. Had the hosts kept things tight in the forwards the result may have been a lot closer than it was.
Top performer for Fiji was without a doubt Ulster winger Timoci Nagusa who looked dangerous every time he had ball in hand. Since first bursting on the scene two seasons ago Nagusa has developed his game immeasurably and look for this 22 year old to play an important part in Fiji’s build up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
However there should also be a special mention for lock Leone Nakarawa - his athletic ability is first rate and he has the potential to become a world class lock. In addition captain Apolosi Satala, hooker Vereniki Sauturaga, flanker Samu Bola, number eight Asaeli Boko and young Josh Matavesi all had sound games.
We leave Romania early Sunday morning and head back to Heathrow. We have one more night in London before catching our return flight back to Fiji on Monday evening. I’m pretty sure every single one of us cannot wait to get back home.
Take care all.
