WIlliam Ryder was unable to held the Digicel Babas claim the Sigatoka 7s. |
Namosi One were crowned champions of the Compac Sigatoka 7s today after outlasting the Digicel Fiji Babas 21-12 in the Cup Final.
The Babas started impressively with Josefa Bole almost opening the account in the first minute when he was forced out in the corner. Moments later a reinvigorated looking William Ryder then failed to gather a chip and chase by the Namosi uprights.
But it was Namosi who claimed the first score when Apisai Naiyabo handed off an injured Emosi Vucago to score under the posts. Ilai Tinai made no mistake with the conversion.
When the Babas failed to adequately deal with the restart Namosi were clinical as Mitieli Tokalau sold the dummy and scored by the uprights. Once again Tinai made no mistake with the conversion.
With the Babas struggling to get out of their own half Livai Kanikoda piled on the misery for the Babas when he scored under the posts. With Tinai converting the scoreline read 21-nil and the Babas looked to be well and truly on the wrong end of a rout.
With halftime looming Ryder had two excellent opportunities to cut the deficit however poor hands meant he knocked forward on both occasions.
With Namosi having carved out a 21-nil lead in the first half it meant they could sit back and defend and so it proved.
In the second half the Babas went about their business with a great deal of urgency but brutal defense frustrated the Babas. In the end sheer determination saw Risiate Tadulala finally cross the Namosi line and then Bole was rewarded for his perseverance with a try of his own.
In the end though, Namosi One more than deserved their victory, as the Babas ran out of steam and time.
It was an impressive tournament for the Jo Savou coached side after they progressed through the tournament unbeaten and in the process saw off the challenge of both the Digicel Warriors in the semi-final and the Digicel Barbarians in the final.
In the Plate Final Nadroga Green overcame a spirited Navosa side 14-7, while in the Bowl Final Nadroga White were far too good for Ra winning 19-nil.
