Digicel and the Fiji Rugby Union today launched the annual Digicel Cup provincial rugby tournament in the presence of all 12 competing captains at the Holiday Inn in Suva ahead of this week’s Round One kick-off.
This will be Digicel’s fourth season as title partners to the Digicel Cup, which is now firmly established as the highlight of the local domestic calendar with a prize fund of $30,000. In fact, including cash sponsorship, the eventual winners of the Digicel Cup could earn themselves, over the course of the season, an amount of $44,000.00 – as Naitasiri did last season.
David Butler, CEO Digicel Fiji said, “Rugby is one of Digicel’s paramount sponsorships and we are proud to be associated so closely with Fiji rugby and its affiliates. Our sponsorship of the Digicel Cup is an important part of our commitment to Fiji rugby.
“Digicel Cup is the biggest provincial rugby tournament in Fiji and this year is made more special with local players using the Digicel Cup to impress selectors for a place in the final team to the World Cup in September.”
Fiji Rugby Union interim board chairman Rafaele Kasibulu said, “The provincial competition is the mainstay of Fiji Rugby, and so we’re incredibly lucky to have a sponsor like Digicel who have a genuine interest for the game and for its growth and success here in Fiji at all levels.”
The first six games of the Digicel Cup kick off from Friday night at Ratu Cakobau Park. Supporters at each of these matches will have the opportunity to participate in fun events throughout each afternoon including the ‘Kick for Cash’ competitions and great entertainment from Digicel’s Gig Rig.
